Superior Chess Academy Chess Curriculum: The 5-Level Learning Path

Five levels, one clear path — from your first checkmate to finding winning moves in your own games.

← Back to Curriculum

We developed the Superior Chess Academy curriculum to guide students from their first checkmate to spotting winning moves in their own games. This five-level sequence is what we teach in every live lesson, for students aged 5 and above — children, teenagers and adults — live from Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Level 1, Checkmates, builds a foundation in king attacks and special rules. Level 2, Winning Material, teaches the tactics that win pieces. Level 3, Mastering Defensive Technique, shows how to defend difficult positions and save inferior ones. Level 4, Sacrifice to Win, develops attacking chess and combinations. Level 5, Finding Winning Moves, covers opening rules, ideas, traps and board etiquette. Lessons last 50 to 60 minutes, live on ChessLang, our online classroom, with a FIDE-rated coach. Group and semi-private classes run on a fixed timetable; one-to-one lessons are arranged flexibly. Every new student starts with a free trial class, booked on WhatsApp at +91 84015 33777.

Students move to the next level when their chess is ready, rather than following a strict calendar. The coach makes this decision by looking at the student's games and performance in lessons. We don't skip levels, and we never rush anyone.

If you are new to checkmating, start with our beginner's guide: How to Checkmate in Chess: A Beginner's Guide.

Formats and schedule

All three formats follow the same five-level curriculum. Chess classes for kids run in every format, for children aged 5 and above.

FormatMax studentsSchedule
Group8–10Fixed timetable
Semi-Private3–4Fixed timetable
1:11Flexible — arranged around your schedule

Group and semi-private classes follow a set timetable. We arrange one-to-one lessons to fit your personal schedule. We make sure class times work with school hours and your specific time zone. If you message us on WhatsApp with the student's age and where you are located, we will offer you the nearest available slots.

How lessons work

Each lesson lasts 50 to 60 minutes and runs live on ChessLang, the academy's online classroom. The coach shares the board on the screen, so you only need a device with an internet connection and a quiet place to sit. We build our lessons around stories, mini-games, and short activities designed for young attention spans. The coach also reviews the games you play to help fix repeating mistakes. If a student misses a class, we provide a live makeup session in another batch so no one falls behind.

If you aren't sure which level is right for you, take our chess level assessment or book a free trial class. The coach will check the student's level during the trial and place them in the correct group. There is no test to pass.
