Children learn chess best when lessons feel like play with a purpose. At Superior Chess Academy, kids' classes are built around short teaching segments, lots of actual playing, puzzles, and mini-games — so a child is thinking and moving pieces throughout the lesson, not sitting through a lecture.
The academy teaches children aged 5 and above. Young beginners start with the fun parts of the game: how the pieces move, mini-games with a few pieces, and their first checkmates. As they grow, the coaching layers in tactics, strategy, and good thinking habits — looking before moving, planning ahead, and learning from mistakes.
What kids learn, step by step
- First steps: piece movement, check and checkmate, and the joy of finishing a game.
- Thinking tools: forks, pins, skewers and other tactics, taught through puzzles children enjoy solving.
- Good habits: checking the opponent's threats, making a plan, managing time on the clock.
- Game skills: opening principles, simple endgames, and how to review one's own games and learn from them.
- Tournament readiness: for children who want to compete — preparation routines, handling wins and losses, and practical decision-making.
Class formats for different children
Every child is different, so there are three formats. Group classes (maximum 8–10 students) suit social learners who enjoy friendly rivalry and learning alongside peers. Semi-private classes (maximum 3–4 students) give more individual attention in a small group — a good fit for ages 5–7 or children who need more guidance. 1:1 private coaching is the most flexible option for a young or easily distracted child: the plan is personalised and the coach sets the pace.
What parents get
Parents can observe the trial class and stay involved afterwards. Coaches share honest feedback on the child's level and progress, and practice material between lessons keeps the learning going at home. If a child is ever unhappy or struggling, the coach will say so plainly and suggest what to change — including waiting a few months if that is the honest answer.
Start with a free trial class
The best way to understand how the coaching works is to experience it. A free trial class lets the student meet the coach, join a real lesson, and see the teaching style first-hand — with no obligation. After the trial, the coach shares honest feedback on the student's level and which format would suit them best.

Frequently asked questions
My child is 5. Is that too young for chess classes?
Not necessarily — most children are ready for structured chess around age 5. The signs to look for: can focus on one activity for about 30 minutes, follows instructions, and can cope with losing a game. The free trial class is the best way to check.
How long are the classes?
Class length is set to suit children's attention spans, with active play and puzzles built into every session rather than long stretches of listening. Exact batch timings are shared on WhatsApp when you book.
Will my child play in tournaments?
Only if and when they want to. Many children simply enjoy learning and playing; those who want to compete get tournament preparation as part of their coaching. There is never any pressure to play competitively.
Can parents watch the classes?
Yes — parents are welcome to observe the trial class, and coaches share regular, honest feedback on the child's progress afterwards.
