Most people learn chess haphazardly: a relative teaches the moves, they play casual games, and they stall. This beginner course replaces guesswork with a structured path — each stage builds on the last, so nothing important is skipped and nothing is taught before its time.
The course is for complete beginners of any age from 5 upwards: children starting out, teenagers picking up the game, and adults learning for the first time or returning after years away. No prior knowledge is assumed.
What the course covers
- The board and pieces: how every piece moves and captures, board coordinates, and setting up correctly.
- Check, checkmate and stalemate: the goal of the game, the special rules (castling, en passant, promotion), and the difference between winning and drawing.
- First checkmates: checkmating with a queen, with a rook, and the basic mating patterns every player must know.
- Piece value and simple tactics: what pieces are worth, forks, pins, and winning material safely.
- Opening principles: developing pieces, controlling the centre, castling early — the ideas behind good openings rather than memorised moves.
- Good thinking habits: looking at the opponent's last move, checking for threats, and having a simple plan before moving.
How beginners learn here
Lessons are live and interactive: short explanations followed by guided practice, mini-games, and puzzles matched to the student's level. Beginners play plenty of games from the very first weeks — because playing is both the point and the practice. The coach watches games, points out patterns, and makes sure bad habits are corrected early, when they are easiest to fix.
What comes after
Graduates of the beginner course move into intermediate coaching with a solid foundation: clean piece play, basic tactics, sensible openings, and the habit of thinking before moving. The coach assesses readiness honestly — students move up when they are ready, not on a fixed calendar.
How the classes work
Every class at Superior Chess Academy is live and coach-led — a real coach teaching in real time, not a recorded video. Students see the coach, the coach sees the students' boards, and questions get answered on the spot. Classes run in three formats:
- Group classes (maximum 8–10 students): learn alongside peers at a similar level. Friendly rivalry, shared puzzle-solving, and learning from other students' questions.
- Semi-private classes (maximum 3–4 students): a smaller group with much more individual attention from the coach — a good middle ground between group energy and personal guidance.
- 1:1 private coaching: the coach's full attention, a plan built around the student's level and goals, and a pace set entirely by the student.
A typical lesson mixes short teaching segments with guided practice games and puzzle-solving, so students are actively playing and thinking throughout — never just listening. Between lessons, students get practice material matched to what was covered in class.
Start with a free trial class
The best way to understand how the coaching works is to experience it. A free trial class lets the student meet the coach, join a real lesson, and see the teaching style first-hand — with no obligation. After the trial, the coach shares honest feedback on the student's level and which format would suit them best.

Frequently asked questions
I have never played chess. Is this course for me?
Yes — the beginner course assumes zero knowledge. It starts with how the pieces move and builds up step by step. Complete beginners of any age from 5 upwards are welcome.
How is this different from learning on a free app?
Apps teach moves; a coach teaches thinking. In live classes the coach watches your games, corrects mistakes as they form, answers your questions, and follows a curriculum — things self-study cannot provide.
How long does the beginner course take?
It depends on the student's age, pace and practice. Children typically work through the foundations over several months of regular classes; adults often move faster. The coach gives honest feedback on progress throughout.
What if I already know the basic moves?
Then you likely start partway through — the trial class lets the coach see exactly where you are, and your plan picks up from there rather than repeating what you know.
