Chess Study Plan for 1200-Rated Players

Positional chess enters the plan: how to win games where nobody hangs anything.

← Back to Home

At 1200, opponents stop hanging pieces every game — and that changes everything. Wins now have to be built, not collected: from better piece activity, weak squares, and small advantages nursed into big ones. A study plan for a 1200-rated player adds positional understanding to the mix for the first time. Roughly 30 percent of study time stays on tactics (sharper now — combinations in real games, not just motifs), 20 percent on openings (deepening the small repertoire: typical middlegame plans, not more lines), 15 percent on endgames (rook endings enter here — they decide more games than any other ending), 10 percent on positional study (weak squares, good and bad bishops, improving your worst piece), and 25 percent on game review (now asking "what was my plan?" in the quiet moments). The classic 1200 leak is playing without a plan in positions with no tactics — this plan attacks that leak directly.

Shares of your study time, not hours. The mix works at any total.

Tactics — 30%

Tactics never leave the plan, but they get harder. Work on combinations in realistic positions on superiorchessacademy.com/puzzles.html — the kind where the first move isn't a check and the idea takes two quiet moves to set up. If every puzzle you solve starts with a check, you're solving below your level.

Game review — 25%

New question at 1200: in the quiet stretches, what was your plan? Most 1200-rated losses aren't blunders — they're ten moves of drifting, each one slightly worsening the position, until the tactics turn against you. Find those stretches in your games. They are where your rating is hiding.

Openings — 20%

Keep the small repertoire, but study it differently now: learn the typical middlegame plans that come out of your openings. Where do your pieces belong? Which pawn break are you playing for? An opening you understand beats a "better" opening you memorized — every time.

Endgames — 15%

Rook endings enter the plan here, and they deserve it: more games reach rook endings than any other type. Learn the basic drawing and winning methods — the Philidor and Lucena positions are the famous starting points. Add them to the king-and-pawn technique you already have.

Positional study — 10%

One idea at a time, applied to your own games first. Start with "improve your worst piece" — in every quiet position, find it and move it somewhere better. Then weak squares, then good and bad bishops. Don't study grandmaster games yet; study yours, with these lenses on.

Questions players ask about the 1200 study plan

What changes when studying chess at 1200?

Positional understanding joins the plan for the first time. Opponents stop hanging pieces every game, so wins have to be built from better piece activity, weak squares, and small lasting advantages. About 10% of study time goes to positional study alongside tactics, openings, endgames and review.

How does a 1200-rated player learn positional chess?

Start with your own games, not grandmaster games. In each quiet position, ask which of your pieces is worst and where it would be better. Learn weak squares, open files, and good and bad bishops one at a time, and look for them in your games first.

Why do I lose to slower, less tactical players at 1200?

Because they improve their position a little on every move while you wait for a tactic that never comes. The answer is learning to make plans in quiet positions: improving your worst piece, creating weaknesses in the opponent's camp, and converting small advantages patiently.

How long does it take a 1200-rated player to reach 1500?

There is no honest fixed timeline — the 1200 to 1500 stretch is where study quality matters more than study hours. Players who form plans in quiet positions, hold worse positions, and convert small advantages move through 1200 steadily.
