Superior Chess Academy offers live online chess classes for students across Kolkata — Salt Lake, New Town, Park Street, Behala, Howrah and beyond. Kolkata has one of India's deepest chess traditions, and our coaching honours that heritage: every class is taught live by a FIDE-rated coach, for students aged 5 and above, with a curriculum that progresses from foundations to tournament skills. Formats include group batches (up to 8–10 students), semi-private groups (3–4), and 1:1 private coaching. Evening batches run in Indian Standard Time, grouped by age and level. Every new student starts with a free trial class — the coach assesses the student's level honestly and recommends the right path. Fees and batch timings are shared on WhatsApp at +91 84015 33777. The academy is based in Bangalore and teaches online across India and worldwide.
Coaching across Salt Lake, New Town and South Kolkata
Kolkata's families are spread wide — a student in New Town, a parent working in Sector V, grandparents in South Kolkata. Reaching a single physical coaching venue across that spread, in evening traffic on the EM Bypass or through Howrah, is a weekly ordeal most families abandon within months. Online classes remove the ordeal: the student logs in from home and learns.
The format also widens the talent pool a child learns with. Instead of the handful of students who happen to live nearby, online batches group students by age and level from across the city — and across India. A bright ten-year-old in Salt Lake trains alongside peers at the same stage, which keeps classes challenging and motivating in a way mixed neighbourhood groups rarely achieve.
Between classes, students receive practice material matched to their lessons, so improvement continues through the week. And parents can observe the trial class and stay involved — coaches share straightforward feedback on progress, including when a child would benefit from a different format or simply more time.

How we ranked. We scored each option on the same checklist: live coach-led instruction, a structured learning path (not random content), a free trial or free tier to evaluate before committing, suitability for the age group this page serves, and practical access from India (IST class timings, WhatsApp support).
A note on honesty: this page is written by Superior Chess Academy, so we place our own academy at #1 — we genuinely believe a live coach who watches your games beats self-study for real improvement. The remaining platforms are famous public names every chess family knows, ranked by how well they serve a learner who wants guidance. Treat this as our informed opinion, not a scientific study.
A city with chess in its bones
Kolkata's relationship with chess runs deep. The city has long been one of India's great chess centres — home to storied clubs, generations of strong players, and major international tournaments that bring the world's best to West Bengal. In Kolkata, chess is not a novelty activity; it is part of the city's intellectual culture, discussed over adda with the same seriousness as literature and football.
That tradition is a wonderful foundation, but tradition alone does not coach a child. What turns a keen young player into a strong one is the same everywhere: systematic training, regular play under guidance, and honest feedback. Our curriculum follows the proven order — foundations, tactics, strategy, endgames, competitive skills — with a live coach reviewing the student's games and fixing the errors that keep recurring.
For Kolkata families, online classes preserve the best of both worlds: the city's rich chess culture as inspiration, and modern structured coaching delivered at home, on schedule, every week.
How the classes are organised
Every student joins one of three formats: group classes with a maximum of 8–10 students, semi-private classes capped at 3–4 students, or 1:1 private coaching. Batches are grouped by age and playing level, so a beginner is never lost among advanced players and an advanced student is never held back.
All classes are live and online, taught in Indian Standard Time with evening batches that fit around school and work. Batch timings, and fee details, are shared on WhatsApp when you enquire.

Frequently asked questions
Kolkata already has chess clubs. Why choose online coaching?
Clubs are wonderful for playing; structured coaching is for improving. Our classes provide a curriculum, a FIDE-rated coach who reviews your child's games, and batches grouped by level — and the free trial lets you compare the teaching directly.
Do you cover Howrah and New Town as well?
Yes — classes are fully online, so students from Howrah, New Town, Salt Lake, South Kolkata and anywhere else join the same batches.
My child plays in school tournaments. Can you help them improve their results?
Yes. Tournament-oriented students get preparation built into their coaching: reviewing their games, fixing recurring mistakes, time management, and handling competitive pressure.
What equipment do we need at home?
Just a computer, laptop or tablet with a camera and microphone, and a stable internet connection. The board and all materials are provided on screen.
How do we learn about fees?
Fees are shared only on WhatsApp at +91 84015 33777 — never published on the website. Message us for the current fee structure and batch timings.
